Cardamom, an evergreen perennial herb, is used in traditional Chinese medicine with a pungent and warm nature.

The word “cardamom” can also refer to a young girl of about thirteen years of age.Girls at the age of Cardamom are usually in middle school where they step in the critical stage of puberty and physical growth, which, however, may not always be accompanied by sunshine and rain.

According to a report jointly released by the Girls Protection Fund of the China Foundation of Culture and Arts for Children and other organisations, a total of 223 cases of sexual abuse against children were exposed in 2021, of which 160, or 71%, were committed by people they know. Behind every known case of sexual abuse against primary and secondary school students, there are likely seven cases remain unexposed. That is, one news exposure may mean that seven similar cases have already occurred. *

In vast rural areas, the lack of parenting and awareness for preventing sexual abuse, as well as inadequate sex education in schools and gender inequality, have made rural areas a high-risk area for child sexual abuse. The lack of scientific sex education is likely to expose children to risks such as sexual abuse, gender-based violence and unwanted pregnancy, as well as the long-term damage on mental health, interpersonal relationships and inability to complete school.

On the occasion of this year’s 99 Public Welfare Day,Shanghai Fosun Foundation and Rende Foundation are jointly launching the “Wonder Girl Project” to raise funds for girls in rural and remote areas to purchase care kits containing warmer pads, brown sugar and ginger tea, anti-bacterial underwear and pads (the care kits will be supplied by the Women’s Health & Menstruation project, which was initiated by four high school girls in Beijing to raise awareness for female menstrual hygiene and health and address ‘menstrual poverty’). The Project will also launch online sex education sessions and an offline ‘Grow Girls Camp’ to promote sexual education and support rural girls and boys in terms of awareness of body growth and self-protection during puberty. At the same time, the Project will also focus on educating boys to build respect and protection for women at an early age.

We hope that this exhibition will raise public awareness of the importance of the “Cardamom age”. You are welcome to draw a Cardamom girl on the board after viewing the exhibition and scan the QR code to make a donation to help protect the Cardamom girls.

*Note: The cases of sexual abuse against children in this report are all publicly reported in the media during the year. Cases that actually occurred or were adjudicated during the year but were not reported in the media have not been included. Therefore, the number of cases presented in this report is not equivalent to the actual total number of child sexual abuse cases in the year.
